Engagement and Opportunity Development Senior Officer

The Engagement and Opportunity Development Senior Officer Position is focused on the search, evaluation and advancement of health related commercial assets within UCSF and the formation of startups to commercialize these assets all with goal of advancing patient care.  This includes detailed market analysis, competitive landscape analysis and developing an early go to market strategy; developing pitch decks, connecting opportunities with investors, identifies key gaps that need to be addressed to in these areas to improve the value of the assets and likelihood of success; seeks outside advice/input as necessary including connecting projects with EiR’s and key opinion leaders as appropriate and makes recommendations to management on next steps.

In addition, the position  works with faculty and departments to improve the outreach of Innovation Ventures and works to add the skills of Innovation Ventures to the research community.

Reporting to the Director, Office of Technology Management and Advancement (“OTMA”), the EODSO conducts various functions including scouting and evaluation of assets in the life science space including therapeutics, diagnostics digital health, and devices and forming startup companies around a subset of these assets.  The ideal EODSO will have skill set for identifying high priority opportunities in the healthcare field and significant experience performing a detailed market assessment including seeking input and feedback from thought leaders throughout different industry sectors. He/she should have significant experience in determining where and what type of IP protection may be afforded to health technologies and how to create a go to market strategy both in the presence and absence of a significant patent position.  In addition, the EODSO will have experience in valuing and managing equity. Eligibility: Interns should be enrolled in or have completed a graduate-level program in life sciences, biomedical engineering or related fields, or business. Interns will sign a non-disclosure agreement prior to the internship.

Business Development Internship Program

The Engagement & Opportunity Development team (EOD) at UCSF Innovation Ventures engages faculty and develops business opportunities for new ventures around select technologies. EOD takes a market-first approach by identifying a product or products and defining potential market opportunities upfront.  The EOD’s Business Development Internship Program offers students and postdocs the opportunity to gain exposure to market opportunity analysis, competitive landscape analysis, and building go-to-market strategies for start-ups. The internship program’s goal is to provide an enriching educational opportunity for students

Eligibility: Interns should be enrolled in or have completed a graduate-level program in life sciences, biomedical engineering or related fields, or business. Interns will sign a non-disclosure agreement prior to the internship.

Time commitment: 5-10 hrs/week

The Catalyst Internship provides an opportunity to be part of an innovative project team to learn about early translational research and the process of translating academic discoveries into products for patient benefit. The primary focus for Catalyst Summer Interns is to draft Target Product Profiles (TPPs) for the 2024 Catalyst Awardees. While creating the TPPs, interns will learn about important aspects of translating an idea into a project. Learn more and apply! 

Approximate commitment: 30-40 total hours over Summer 2024. This allows for flexibility with respect to fitting in other activities and commitments (other internships, summer jobs, vacations, etc.). 


Catalyst Summer Interns will:

  • Attend the workshops / seminars around TPPs and Innovation & Entrepreneurship in June, July, and August (exact dates TBD)
  • Work with the 2024 Catalyst Awardee project teams to draft a TPP
  • Participate in the TPP presentation to the Catalyst Industry Advisor Committee in August 2024
  • Be invited to and participate in other entrepreneurial education opportunities, fireside chats, etc.
